5 Ways in which farm animals have improved using genetic engineering.

INTRODUCTION

      In the middle 20th century a new science was discovered. It is called genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is based on a modification in the different parts of the DNA.  Genetically modified organism is the term used to describe an individual whose genome has been modified using this type of techniques.
Our project talks about this individuals, mostly about the animals we can find  in farms and how they have been modified to get an improvement on their genetics.

     There are some problems with the genetic modifications because people think that is not ethical or that animal suffer on this experiments.

MODIFICATIONS

     We are going to talk about five different ways farm animals have been modified

    1. An insuline producer cow:

   A genetically modified cow changed to produce this substance in its milk. This is a great change for the society and a big improvement for the diabetic people. Although it is really bad for the farmaceutic industry, its a big loss of money for them because this problem moves and generates huge quantities of money. 
    Now its just a project but in the future probably the whole world will have this modified cows, and the production of insulin will ne easier, cheaper and more globalised.


  2. Growing hormone on farming animals

     At the farms growing hormones are used on cows or pigs to make them develop faster and grow theirselves. This is used to improve the generation in productivity and economical efficiency. It has an enormous economic efficiency, bigger size bigger products to sold, more income. It can have ethical contradictions because the physical appearance of the animal is being changed.



  3. Mansa the calf

     Mansa was a genetically modified organism who was a cloned and transgenic calf. It comes from the Porteña dinasty (a group of transgenic cows). It was modified to produce the growth hormone in its milk. The obtention of this kind of products in the milk is particularly interesting for proteins that are required in big quantities or that may be really complex. 


   4. Aquadvantage salmon

    This salmon has been genetically modified with a gene that enables it to grow the whole year instead of growing only in spring and summer. This animal is triploid having 3 cromosomes instead of just 2. This salmon has been modified with the growth hormone by the aquabounty technology this transferred genes allow the genetically modified fish to achive accelerate growth rates, which confer longer survival and reproductive successe 



  5. Hen genetically modified to lay eggs with useful proteins 

They have created hens that can produce eggs with proteins able to cure illnesses as exclerosis or cancer.They have achieved that the modification last for more than one generation so that the effect doesn´t dissapear.This modification has been reached by the british scientifics.At the moment there are 500 hens producing this type of eggs.Later this proteins cab be easily from the yolk of the egg.
